Adult Short-Term Outpatient Assessment & Treatment (ASTAT) for Mental Health

Provided by Island Health

Provides screening, assessment, treatment recommendations, and referrals to other Island Health Mental Health & Substance Use and external community programs if appropriate.
Adult Short-Term Assessment & Treatment Programs (ASTAT) provide free, short-term support for adults experiencing severe mental health and substance use issues. Clients are assessed by a clinician or primary therapist before a therapist begins working with the individual to help them achieve their mental health goals. The following services are available:
  • Single or multi-sessions, as needed
  • Individual or group psycho-education, as appropriate
  • Psychiatric assessment and consultation
  • Self-management support
  • Referrals to other community services, if needed.
  • Optional consultation and follow-up by a team of psychiatrists may be offered as needed.
Eligibility
  • Adults aged 19 and over
  • Individual has serious mental health conditions
  • Resides on Vancouver Island
Additionally, Victoria offers an Urgent Short Term Assessment & Treatment (USTAT) program. Services provided are the same as ASTAT offers across Vancouver Island, with added components for those in crisis, at risk, or in severe distress. Eligibility is also the same as with ASTAT programs.

  • Referral is required (providers see below)
  • For those with no primary healthcare provider, or those looking for more information, please call the local Mental Health and Substance Use team (see below) to begin receiving care.

Service Link providers speak with the client/patient at this central access phone number to provide help for clients navigating Island Health services for substance use, harm reduction and mental health. Note: This is not a line for health professionals to initiate a referral.
